The track with The Weeknd is pretty great and a few others are pretty solid too.
This album is more so a disappointment than an outright bad album though. Isn’t that kind of what thank u, next was about? It’s also tackled much better on that album too. The difference between him and Ariana though is that she is so far into her career at this point where it seems like she was trying to prove a point by dropping content like this. I don’t mind if an album has sexual themes or even dirty lyrics, The Weeknd truthfully can be accused of this too. Not only was it dull, but it was also unexpectedly overtly sexual. When this dropped I was just struck by how unbelievably dull it was. The lead single and title track to Positions was a pretty solid track, not thank u, next or No Tears Left to Cry by any means but it was still playlist worthy. She really ruled the radios these past few years and was a reason to actually listen to Top 40. I even had the pleasure of seeing these albums performed live. Dangerous Woman, sweetener, and thank u, next were all phenomenal albums. Ariana Grande was mainstream pop’s heroine. That blackbear feature too is just… next. Travis Barker, one of the best living drummers, is also on this atrocity and even if the two are friends I just feel secondhand embarrassment. His lyrics and weird pop punk transition from rap through Tickets to My Downfall only proves it further with lazy lyrics and just blatantly trying to rip off blink-182 and not the good blink-182. His persona just screams out “peaked in high school”. I mean look what happened when he tried to cross Eminem back in 2018. They always separate the art from the artist, but it’s kind of hard in this situation when MGK is a known douchebag. Does MGK seriously think that lyrics like “kiss kiss kiss kiss the bottle all night” are original or even remotely interesting? This album reminds me of those nights where maybe you drink a bit too much and wake up feeling dirty and want to immediately wash your clothes and yourself. I actually enjoyed his single My Bloody Valentine quite a bit earlier this year too.
He’s a lively performer and has an appeal for sure. Somehow I’ve seen MGK twice live in my life. Drop any recommendations for the coming year if you feel inclined to do so. I am not going to write about all 140 albums I heard this year, but I’d say expect something for MOST of the ones I heard. It is December 28th as I am writing this so I might listen to more albums by the time 2020 is over, but I figure I might as well get a head start on this year’s bottom portion. This isn’t just album that came out this year, actually a handful of these aren’t even really from this decade.
I decided it would be fun (and time consuming) to make a list of everything that I listened to this year and I mean EVERYTHING. Sure there’s duds and disappointments, but if that’s the price I have to pay to get another good Strokes album then that’s fine by me. In coda poi #BrittanyHoward, leader degli #AlabamaShakes con cinque nomination come #BillieEilish. Una carrellata di nove nomination a #Beyoncé, seguita da #TaylorSwift e #DuaLipa con sei a testa. In generale parrebbe che questa edizione voglia essere più inclusiva, con cambi di nomenclatura delle categorie e molto più spazio alle donne. Tra i fan è forte il sospetto che sia stato penalizzato in quanto performerà all’Halftime Show del Superbowl appena una settimana dopo la serata dei Grammy ma la Recording Academy ribadisce che le votazioni per le nomination sono avvenute molto prima della diffusione della notizia. Dovete trasparenza a me, i miei fan e l'industria". Questo sembra essere il caso dell’edizione 2021 dei Grammy Awards, già a giudicare dalle nomination annunciate ieri.Ī #TheWeeknd non va proprio giù di essere stato escluso da tutte le nomination per cui era idoneo: "I Grammy sono corrotti. Partiamo da una premessa: non esiste premio che possa avere la pretesa di determinare il valore degli artisti, un award show è interessante solo nella misura in cui riesce ad intrattenere il pubblico che lo segue e – soprattutto – quando crea controversie su cui memare per i giorni successivi.
